IRS Finalizes Agreement to Share Confidential Taxpayer Information With ICE

New IRS-ICE deal breaks long-standing protections, raising alarm ahead of major court challenge

CHICAGO — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has reached an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to share confidential taxpayer information with law enforcement, according to court records filed late Monday. In a government filing late yesterday, the government disclosed that the IRS and ICE had finalized a deal that would allow immigration agents to request taxpayer information from the IRS for the purposes of deportation.

In response, Kevin H., Legal Director at Raise the Floor Alliance, issued the following statement:

“The IRS is meant to be a neutral agency that protects taxpayer confidentiality—not a tool of Trump’s political agenda. This agreement shatters the safeguard that immigrant workers have relied on to file taxes, protect their families, and contribute to their communities without fear.

By opening the door to ICE, the IRS is betraying the very people who have sustained our economy and funded public services. If this deal is allowed to stand, it won’t just hurt immigrants—it will erode the trust that holds our entire tax system together.”
