ALERT: Free Willian Giménez! Stop ICE Raids on Chicago Workers

Leer en español

On Friday, September 12th, ICE agents abducted Willian Giménez, a Chicago day laborer, while he was entering a barbershop in Little Village with his wife. He is still in detention and was transferred to the North Lake ICE Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan.

North Lake Processing Center reopened in June as a maximum security prison to house immigrants from the Midwest. There’s no transparency regarding conditions, and detainees have limited legal access. In Chicago, ICE agents arbitrarily abducted Willian Giménez, taking him to the Broadview Detention, and have now transferred him to the North Lake ICE facility, where he is being held despite not having an order of removal and a pending asylum case.

Willian is a plaintiff in a lawsuit against police and corporate abuses of migrant day laborers seeking work at Home Depot and has been an outspoken advocate for worker rights. His arrest is blatant retaliation for speaking out against Home Depot and the Chicago Police Department.

The growing presence of Day Laborers at corner hiring sites, particularly near Home Depots, has led to tension in various Chicago communities, especially those with high unemployment and disinvestment. Day Laborers face violence, racial profiling, arrest, human rights abuses, wage theft, and other precarious conditions due to local reactions and the nature of unregulated work in Chicago. Willian and others have long challenged police and corporate surveillance of Day Laborers at Home Depot hiring corners.

Join us in demanding that Illinois and Michigan Members of Congress call the North Lake ICE Facility, the Regional ICE Office, and the Executive Office of Immigration Review and make an inquiry about Willian Giménez’s health, why he is being detained, and demand his immediate release. His disappearance into ICE custody is a retaliatory attack on worker voices and a threat to all communities.
