ALERT: Free Willian Gimenez – Stop ICE Raids on Chicago Workers

On Friday, September 12th, ICE agents abducted Willian Gimenez, a Chicago day laborer, while he was entering a barbershop in Little Village with his wife. Willian is a plaintiff in a lawsuit against police and corporate abuses of migrant day laborers looking for work at Home Depot and has been an outspoken advocate for worker rights. His arrest is blatant retaliation for speaking out against Home Depot and the Chicago Police Department.

  • The growing presence of Day Laborers at corner hiring sites, particularly near Home Depots, has led to tension in various Chicago communities, especially those with high unemployment and disinvestment. Day Laborers face threats of violence, arrest, human rights abuses, wage theft, and other precarious conditions due to local reactions and the nature of unregulated work in Chicago. Willian and others have long challenged police and corporate surveillance of Day Laborers at Home Depot hiring corners.

  • Across the country, masked ICE agents in tactical gear have been descending on Home Depots, forcing migrant Day Laborers to weigh earning needed income against the risk of being arrested or deported. These past few weeks, ICE raids have aggressively picked up, targeting Chicago workers and escalating fear in immigrant neighborhoods.

  • On Saturday, September 13th, Members of Congress and local elected officials stood outside the Broadview ICE Detention Center, condemning the retaliatory abduction of Willian Gimenez and underscoring the deadly stakes of militarized enforcement.

  • Over the weekend, ICE transferred Willian out of the Broadview ICE Detention Center and has not disclosed Willian’s location, denying his attorneys access and violating his right to due process.

This is not about safety. This is about silencing workers who dare to challenge exploitation by militarizing ICE agents.
