Two dangerous anti-immigrant bills—House Resolution 32 and House Resolution 35—are going to be voted on in Congress. HR 32 threatens to strip federal funding from sanctuary cities and states, while HR 35 criminalizes immigrants, including those with legal status, and imposes harsh penalties without due process. Both bills will hurt millions of immigrants, U.S.-born residents and communities at large by targeting sanctuary policies, social services, and fundamental labor rights.

Update @ 10:30 AM: HR 35 has passed out of the house, but we can still stop HR 32 in the house!

Sample script: 

My name is ________ and I am a constituent in Rep. ______’s district. I’m calling to thank the representative for voting against HR 35 and to urge the representative to VOTE NO on HR 32. This bill does not uphold democracy, are unconstitutional, and will jeopardize labor enforcement and community safety. I’m requesting that my representative vote NO.

If your US Representative for Illinois is Rep. Budzinski or Rep. Sorenson, they voted YES on HR 35 and need to hear your disapproval! Use this script instead:

My name is ________ and I am a constituent in Rep. ______’s district. I’m calling to express disappointment in  Rep. Budzinski’s/Sorenson’s support of HB 35 and to urge her/him to VOTE NO on HR 32. These bills do not uphold democracy, are unconstitutional, and will jeopardize labor enforcement and community safety. I’m requesting that my representative vote NO on HR 32.

Note: The person answering the phone will likely ask for your address or zip code or if you live in the district. Most Representatives will only take messages from constituents who live in their district; and they weigh phone calls much higher than emails or petitions, so it is extremely important for you to call!  

Anti-immigrant activists will be calling to support this harmful legislation. It is critical that we flood representatives’ offices with messages to VOTE NO!

About HR 32

HB 32, labeled the “No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act,” would strip federal funding from sanctuary municipalities and states. 

• This bill explicitly targets states and cities that believe everyone should have access to the safety, opportunity, and stability that all families are entitled to. 
• HR 32 will penalize these states by disrupting social services like youth development, mental health counseling, educational grants, and access to Medicaid. 

The impact will affect millions of immigrant and US-born residents and communities across the country.

About HR 35 - Passed out of the House on 2/13

HR 35 is a bill that pretends to address public safety but, in reality, targets immigrant communities under the guise of criminal justice.

• This bill would impose harsh criminal and immigration penalties for fleeing a federal officer while operating a motor vehicle, creating unnecessary risks and compounding fear within immigrant communities. There are already criminal and legal penalties in place under current law.
• It fails to account for real-time circumstances, providing no relief or due process protections for individuals accused of evading arrest.
• Most alarmingly, HR 35 would grant sweeping powers to detain and deport non-citizens, including green card holders, without due process—jeopardizing the rights and safety of millions of immigrants who are lawfully present in the U.S.

This bill is yet another cruel attack on immigrant workers and families, designed to criminalize communities rather than foster real public safety.
