Wage Protection Act Support

Your support for the Wage Protection Act - HB4324 means we're one step closer to passing this bill as a law so that Illinois workers can actually collect their wages in cases of wage theft.

Working families shouldn't have to make impossible decisions to make ends meet. Low-wage workers shouldn't be given the runaround when it comes to their right to be paid in full and on time--they must be able to rely on their owed wages. HB4324, the Wage Protection Act - was introduced by Rep. Chris Welch (7th D) to give workers a tool to collect their stolen wages and prevent bad employers from evading their debts by transferring assets or filing for bankruptcy. This proposed bill builds off existing laws in the construction industry and would ensure all workers are entitled to their legal right and the most basic premise of our economy - that a day's worth of pay is owed for a day's worth of work. Wage theft is immoral and indecent. Only thugs would agree that it is appropriate or acceptable.

Those most likely to suffer wage theft have the fewest resources to try to redress it. While this bill will not magically level the playing field, it will certainly help make existing legal remedies more effective. Illinois should not be lagging behind our neighbors in Indiana and Wisconsin in protecting workers from wage theft.

Banks own Congress. Let’s dent that by paying workers a livable wage with benefits, as is done in Europe.

Please vote yes. Employees need to be protected, and employers will take as much advantage as they can legally. Therefore it’s up to legislators to protect us. Thank you.

The most important debt any business should be required to pay regardless of bankruptcy or dissolution is any debt owed to workers for labor that has already been provided. The loss of wages for the average worker is a catastrophic event for themselves and their family. They must be made whole, and money owed them must take precedence over any and all other debt.
